To Eat or Not To Eat
By Jill Langham
It seems that people are always asking me about the way that I look and usually ask me how often I work out. I typically reply, “that’s the wrong question, what you really want to know is how often I eat!” For the majority of my life, I ate very little, until it was time for me to binge and then, look out! I was in and out of the starvation mode and had no understanding of how detrimental it was. I was either depriving myself or over feeding myself and my moods were like that of a roller coaster. I was either way up or way down. I had little to no consistency in my life and was chronically depressed, until I met my husband in 2000, and he began to show me a different way of taking care of myself.
He taught me how to eat. Now I know it might sound silly, but trust me when I tell you it is the single most important thing that changed my life and my body. When we met, I was entering my 25th year of weight lifting and had very little to show for it, except a healthy heart from all the cardio I’d been doing all those years. I had no visible muscles on my body but was actually quite strong. I had tried every diet known to womankind, with zero results. Once we began our relationship and was in what I call the honeymoon stage, the stage where you want to please them to no end, he convinced me that I needed to eat 6 meals a day! I thought he was crazy, but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. On January 10, 2000, I began a 5 month transformation that ended on June 10, 2000 on a stage in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I competed in my first bodybuilding show 11 days before my 45th birthday. I won three first place awards, one of which was best in show and one second place trophy! The most surprised person in the room was me.
I mentioned that eating changed my life which I guess is apropos seeing that everyone is talking about the movie, Eat, Pray, Love. But, rather than go to Italy and eat everything in sight, I think the real message is that feeding oneself properly leads to loving oneself, at least, that is the message I got. But, I believe that it is what you eat and when you eat it that makes the difference. There is so much false information out there being presented by people who may appear to sound intelligent and who present themselves as guru’s, but they themselves don’t walk the walk. Every other day, I see or hear something coming out of Hollywood which is some crazy fad that insists that you don’t need to do anything, including exercise, cardio or weight lifting to have the body you’ve always dreamed of. I wish to God, it were true, but trust me when I tell you that your body doesn’t work that way. Next month, I will share what foods I eat and when.
The Best,
Jill
