ࡱ> |~{%` Pbjbj 0̟̟P o $[ h ) `E&2 ? 0o I I I ( o THOUGHTS JULY 08 This is the month we celebrate in red, white and blue fashion. We are involved in a senseless war that is costing us our future. Some of my friends have lost their homes due to foreclosure, and tens of thousands are losing their jobs because of the corruption of corporate greed in this country. The value of my home has dropped $40,000! Still feel like celebrating? Ive owned Caravan Dispatch, a flyer distribution company, since 2001. The income from my business this year has dropped fifty per cent. Its a service offered to realtors to communicate their listings to each office and agent in the Coachella Valley. I provide pick up and distribution, which means I use a lot of gas driving around to the various offices. We are now paying well over $4.00 per gallon and it has sure made an impact on my bottom line and yours. We need to translate our outrage into alternative energy sources. We are decades behind because of the collusion of our government with the auto and oil lobbyists to squash, ignore, intimidate, pay-off and bribe some of our elected officials. Ethanol is not the answer. Drilling for more oil is not the answer. The answer lies within us to say no more and stop the insanity. We need a commitment to a sensible new energy policy. I have read and seen the stories being reported about people who have created alternative energy sources with batteries, water, electricity, hydrogen, etc. It is here and now we have to demand access to it and stop this nonsense of secrecy in our government. We use about 2 million barrels of oil a day just to make the non-biodegradable plastics we use in this country that then befoul our environment. We need to change the way we have done things in the past because they do not serve us today. We could move to Venezuela where the price of gas is $.12 cents a gallon or Iran at $.40 cents. Considering what the cost of gas is in Norway at $8.73 per gallon, or the United Kingdom at $8.38 a gallon, our prices seem tame. We are now paying the price for so many years of artificially low prices and no commitment to alternatives. We have an election in November to vote for a new President. This is a very important election and I believe we need a drastic change in how our government operates. In California we already have approximately eleven initiatives that have qualified for the ballot. Prop. 4 is yet another Parental Notification Measure, as if Californians hadn't already rejected this misleading and poorly-conceived idea twice in recent years (Prop. 73 in 2005 and Prop. 85 in 2006). Proposition 8 would amend the California Constitution to prohibit marriage equality, undoing the recent State Supreme Court ruling that has finally allowed loving same-sex couples to marry. I will be talking about them in the coming months and their relevance to our lives. There is a special election for CANOW in August and I will be traveling to San Diego with Carol Evans, our local delegate and a member of the CANOW PAC, and our recording secretary, Melissa Darnell, recent graduate of Cal State San Bernardino obtaining her Masters in Social Work. Congratulations Melissa! During the summer months PSNOW takes a break from meetings in July and August. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, September 2nd -6 pm at the Pride Center in Palm Springs.
